Real rust, real iron on canvas. Real iron powder and iron filings were used in this work. In the first step, the canvas was pre-treated and then the iron was applied in many layers to the worked-out structure and finally made to rust.
This created a very interesting structure and a lively rust surface on the canvas. The visible surface was deliberately not sealed, so the surface lives through the iron. The appearance of the rust layer may therefore change over time. However, the oxidation process is basically complete and major changes will no longer take place.
Even though rust stands for transience and ageing, it has a certain charm of strength, experience and gives the room an “industrial chic” look. The back of the stretcher frame, i.e. the surfaces that will later be in contact with the wall, are sealed. This means that there is no soiling from the rust between the wall and the support surfaces.
