What does a painting sound like? A musical translation of my work “Blue”
A collaboration with Jakob Wiersch, composer and musician.
Listen to a painting? Picture scoring makes exactly that possible. Imagine a work of art suddenly coming to life. The colors breathe, the shapes move and a melody fills the room. This experience was created through the collaboration between me, the artist Björn Wiedemann and the musician & composer Jakob Wiersch. In this article, I report and write about how my painting “Blue” was transformed into music and the emotions behind the soundtrack.
The artwork “Blue” from October 2024 (60 x 80 cm) was translated into a musical composition:
What is Picture-Scoring?
Picture scoring is the art of translating visual works into music. Jakob Wiersch specializes in this and composes an individual soundscape for each picture. He takes the choice of color, structure and emotions of a painting and translates these impressions into a musical composition.
This technique goes far beyond mere background scoring – it gives a work of art an acoustic identity. Anyone who looks at a painting and listens to its soundtrack at the same time experiences a completely new, deeper perception of art.
The setting of “Blue” – When colors have sounds
My painting “Blue” is a visual journey through contrasts and emotions. At first glance, the black – gloomy and dominant – seems to have the upper hand. It is heavy, oppressive – as if it dominates the entire painting. But on closer inspection, you can see the friendly blue bravely making its way through the darkness.
These contrasts are particularly meaningful to me personally, as they reflect a sense of perseverance and inner strength. With this work, I had created a fascinating, expressive painting that captivated Jakob.
The idea arose to translate another work of art audibly with our collaboration, to break down the boundaries between painting and music. Jakob wanted to compose a piece of music that would capture and intensify the emotions and atmosphere of this painting.
So he composed several versions of the piece of music step by step, which he sent to me. We discussed these intermediate results together. Each version was a further development of the previous step – always with the aim of capturing the essence of the painting.
The emotional depth of the work finally became audible in the final setting. The music begins with heavy, melancholy sounds – but gradually a hopeful, lively melody unfolds. It reflects the struggle between light and shadow and brings my artistic message of “Blue” into an audible dimension.
The finished composition for the painting
A creative symbiosis: the cooperation with Jakob Wiersch
Working with Jakob Wiersch, Musician and composer, was an inspiring experience for me. Here, art and music merge into a unity in which both media reinforce each other. I exchanged ideas with Jakob about our visions over time. This also allowed me to reflect on the colors and shapes of the abstract painting, while Jakob sensed the appropriate sounds and rhythms for it.
This creative dialog resulted in an extraordinary symbiosis of image and sound. The painting becomes an even more intense experience through Jakob’s music.
This kind of cooperation shows how much different art forms can benefit from each other. Anyone who looks at my painting and listens to the composition at the same time experiences a deeper connection to art. That’s what art is all about – it moves, connects and opens up new perspectives.
Conclusion – art knows no limits
Jakob Wiersch’s picture scoring makes it possible to experience works of art on an additional level. His scoring has given my painting “Blue” a new dimension that goes beyond the visual and makes emotions audible. Jakob has managed to transform my intentions and emotions, which I myself want to convey with the work, into something audible and tangible. Thank you Jakob.
This collaboration shows that art knows no boundaries. When different forms of creativity come together, extraordinary things can be created.
I am delighted about this wonderful collaboration and am excited to see what other synergies will arise from this interaction.
